Use our guide to plan your festive winter break in Leeds, with many outstanding markets and events to choose between.
13th November – 20th December 2015
As one of the most established German Christmas Markets in the UK, the Leeds Christkindelmarkt now attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors every year. Over 40 wooden chalet style stalls will be placed in neat rows to offer easy access to an array of handcrafted gifts, cards and charming tree decorations, as well as a choice of delicious German specialities. With savoury options including bratwurst sausages and schnitzels, to gingerbread hearts, candied fruits and stollen for the sweet-toothed, there’ll be a tempting snack to suit all tastes. Themed indoor venues will also offer up a whole host of treats including the Frankfurter Scheune festive meeting hall and the popular Alp Chalet Bavarian eatery, which is worth booking in advance.
The area within the already impressive surroundings of Millennium Square will be transformed into a picturesque continental village with sparkling lights and festive greenery adorning each wooden frame. Returning for its 14th year, the free-entry seasonal event will offer an enjoyable atmosphere as well as family-friendly entertainment including a traditional carousel.
6th December 2015
With Victorian dress encouraged, choir performances providing the soundtrack and the scents of traditional foods filling the air, Otley’s Victorian Christmas Fayre will take visitors on a journey back to the era when festive celebrations as we now know them began. Situated a 45 minute drive from 42 The Calls, the scenic village is surrounded by countryside and dispersed along the curves of the River Wharfe, which will offer a beautiful backdrop to the rows of stalls and traditional fairground rides on offer. Wreath and fairy-light filled boutique windows will be in competition for the village’s shop display prize, while the Bellman will wander through its courtyards and alleys calling out the latest local news.
A shopping guide will be available to purchase on the day to offer suggestions on where to sample the highest quality festive foods and drinks from local suppliers. While street organ music plays, dance troupes will impress crowds and Punch and Judy shows will entertain the little ones. With such a fun-filled events programme that will also feature a Santa’s Grotto in the market place and an awe-inspiring after-dark lantern parade through the village streets, Otley will offer a truly enchanting day out for the whole family during a luxury stay in Leeds this December.
