The Luna Cinema: Three-Nights of Open-Air Screenings
3 July 2017
For the Ultimate Weekend of Cinema, Enjoy a Nightly Roll Call of Film and Experiences at Harewood
Fancy a fix of open-air film this September? Over at Harewood House the Luna Cinema presents La La Land, Grease and Back To The Future at the most beautiful outdoor cinema in Leeds. Before the film begins, enjoy penguin feeding and explore the gardens and art collection on-site.
Premium Cinema Experience
The Premium Cinema Experience begins before the film even starts. Enjoy a complimentary drink at the pop-up Luna Bar, which offers a full range of beverages. You can also pre-order your Estrella Damm bucket online. Once your phone is switched off, the usher will escort you down a maze of picnic blankets to your reserved director’s chair. With the Palace of Harewood lit up behind the big screen, there is no doubt that this is a real spectacle.
Friday 8th September
2 people at a time (two slots daily, 11am and 3:30pm)
Make your trip to Harewood House even more special with a face to face encounter with penguins. The Penguin Feeding Experience gives you the chance to get to know the birds and help the keepers with the feed. This is a 30-minute session at the Penguin Pool in the Bird Park. After a short briefing, you will help prepare lunch for the Humboldt Penguins. This involves weighing out the fish and putting a vitamin tablet in their gills. Then comes the bit you’ve been waiting for. At the pool, you will be able to interact with the penguins, witness their underwater antics and feed them.
Musical Masterpiece: La La Land
Friday 8th September (Doors open 6.15pm |Film 7:45pm)
The surroundings feel particularly suited to the visually wonderful La La Land. This is a sweet, sad, beguiling movie from Damien Chezelle – the director of Whiplash. Luna Cinema could not have wished for a bigger sugar rush to start the weekend. It’s a tribute to classic movie musicals, following the romance of two lovers aspiring to fame in Los Angeles. Expect an extravagant finish, complete with painted sets that almost blend in with the picture-perfect Harewood. And even if the movie ends in tears, a drink at the Lunar Bar will have you toasting this award-winning favourite.
Saturday 9th September
The Himalayan Garden
Blessed with 1,000 acres of grounds, Harewood amazes with an abundance of pristine gardens. Above all rises the Himalayan Garden, a mini replication of the Himalayas and a plant-hunter’s paradise. Alan Titchmarsh, who opened the garden in May 2009, said “The Harewood Himalayan Garden is a hidden gem and second to none in the UK!” Here you can also, stroll along the path to the Harewood Stupa, a Buddhist monument built in 2004 by Bhutan monks.
We’ve Got Chills and they’re Multiplyin’
Saturday 9th September (Doors open 6.15pm |Film 7:45pm)
Grease is the ultimate open-air movie for the whole family. The classic 1978 musical film, starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton John, calls for an American-style picnic of bagels and milkshakes. Settle down on your picnic blanket for some hand-jiving, bomber jackets and those famous tunes. The Luna Cinema’s state of the art screen and premium sound system means the sound effects are sharper, the print cleaner and the songs louder than ever before.
Sunday 10th September
Harwood House Art Collection
Enter the palace of Harewood House to find an unrivalled collection of treasures: from Old Master paintings, family portraits and Renaissance antiquities to unmissable galleries of modern art, Turner watercolours, Adam-Chippendale masterpieces and Roger Fenton photographs. Visit the galleries and pick up a map for exploring the house and grounds on entry.
A Trilogy to Remember: Back to the Future
Sunday 10th September (Doors open 6.15pm |Film 7:45pm)
The Luna Cinema guarantees a glitzy final evening with a gala performance of Back to the Future. Robert Zemeckis’ time-travelling teen comedy starring Michael J Fox is one of the classic films of the Eighties. Expect plenty of thrills as the young Marty McFly jumps into his gull-winged DeLorean, which travels back 30 years to 1955. Christopher Lloyd scores big laughs as the nutty, grumpy scientist Doc Brown, who gets Marty back to 1985. This irresistible fantasy is a fitting end to a cinematic weekend of sci-fi, action, romance and comedy.
