Unmissable Events at Leeds Waterfront Festival 2015
16 June 2015
The Best Sights, Sounds & Spectacles at This Year’s Waterfront Festival
Stick the word ‘Waterfront’ between ‘Leeds’ and ‘Festival’ and focus shifts from music acts and muddy fields to an exciting weekend of family friendly entertainment next to the glittering River Aire. The last weekend in June is set to be a highlight in the city’s 2015 calendar, with thousands heading to its wharfs, docks and mills to enjoy food, drink, dance, poetry, art and so much more. We’ve narrowed down Leeds Waterfront Festival's incredible selection to a handful of highlights on each day.
Saturday 27th June
Now in its 8th year, the festival’s popular Dragon Boat Race is set to attract crowds of spectators to Leeds Dock. With proceeds going to the Jane Tomlinson Appeal, the likes of Google, Leeds Beckett University and NHS Shared Business have already signed up, and will be busy training hard in the hope of being the fastest team over the finishing line. Head down there from 10am and cheer them on between delicious bites of street food at the Folk and Ale Festival. There’ll be one vendor that might attract attention a little more than the others though - Little Fingy’s ice cream van. Local knitting community O.W.L Industries have created a stunning patchwork cover for the van and will be unveiling their masterpiece on the 27th, before it drives off for a festival filled summer raising money for educational projects.
For entertainment with a little more edge, head over to Brewery Wharf for 5pm to marvel at a music performance without any instruments. Local trio, Bloxed Beats' unique beat boxing talents have been praised by the likes of Dizzie Rascal, Jamie Cullum and the Ellen Degeneres Show, and led to them performing on the main stage at Soundwave festival in Croatia... so you can expect to be impressed. From 7pm, Leeds’ wordsmiths will be taking centre stage during an exclusive poetry open mic night from Blank Page Industries. Whether you’re hoping to step up or listen in, join an intimate audience of 30 on a canal boat at Canal Wharf for a truly inspirational evening.
Sunday 28th June
Those hoping for a sleepy Sunday should stop reading now. Begin the day at 11am with an enlightening three mile Art Run along the riverside with mother and daughter duo the ‘Veggie Runners’. The award-winning bloggers will be offering interesting facts about the area’s industrial history and magnificent architecture during this free and fun form of exercise. If you’re left feeling reenergised and ready for the next activity, from 12.30pm not-for-profit initiative Salsa Rocks Leeds will be hosting an entire afternoon dedicated to the popular up-tempo dance at Brewery Wharf. Beginners will be invited to find out more with free salsa classes and demonstrations, while DJ Mark Johnson provides the toe-tapping beats of Merengue and Mambo music… and the alfresco festival bar serves sangria!
For something equally as engaging but a little less energetic, why not dedicate the day to art and design. Comics Power UK will be offering a mini-workshop aboard a barge from 11am. As the sister group of World Comics India, known for championing grassroots comics as a platform for self-expression, expect help in communicating issues in a creative way. With its array of craft markets, the festival will be full of beautiful handmade wares, however for something a little bit different, take a trip over to Thwaite Mills. Alongside live music, bush craft and badge making, its historic surroundings will also be home to a Steampunk Market. Meet artists, designers and authors all inspired by neo-Victorian style, sci-fi and steam-powered machinery, before taking a vintage shuttle bus over to Granary Wharf for a 10 minute stroll back to luxury accommodation at 42 The Calls.
Located in the centre of the action, 42 The Calls offers a luxury boutique stay with four-star facilities and stunning views over the glistening Aire.
